The units shipped so far skew towards research, development, and entertainment purposes. The breakthrough driving the shift.

What changed is how robots are programmed. Older industrial arms run fixed routines. Hand a part at an unfamiliar angle or an unknown object, and it stalls. The new platforms run on vision-language-action models: they take in camera input alongside a plain-language instruction and produce motion directly. They learn from human demonstrations and fleet data rather than pre-engineered motions. That ability to generalize is what finally opens up messy, unstructured environments for robots.

No ready corpus of this data exists, which makes it a near-term bottleneck, though start-ups around the world are tackling it. The real difficulty is the path to collecting it, and there are two. Field deployment is circular: a robot has to run at low failure rates before it starts logging useful data. Simulation only helps once there is enough real data to close the gap between simulated and real motion, which is why the parallel race is to build world models accurate enough that skills learned in simulation hold up on real hardware. Either way, the compute requirement only matters if one of these paths keeps the data flowing.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" From about 1950 to 2000, automation and productivity climbed while the US labor market kept expanding. Labor force participation only began to diverge after 2000, and that is mostly attributable to aging demographics and globalization rather than to machines replacing workers. As productivity rose, each hour of human work became more valuable, and people produced more while working fewer hours. ARK’s broader bet is that general-purpose robots will spin up entirely new job categories, the way earlier technologies did, even if we can’t picture them yet. The displacement risk is real and worth taking seriously, especially through short transitions, but ARK’s research points to augmentation as the dominant effect over time.
<div They are the considered allocations of pension funds, corporate treasuries, endowments, and sovereign entities—capital that moves slowly and stays long.

ARK’s Big Ideas 2026 report identifies bitcoin as one of 15 transformative innovation platforms reshaping the world. This cycle is defined by institutionalization and infrastructure. Regulated vehicles exist. Custody standards have matured. Retirement accounts are opening access. The convergence of regulatory clarity, declining volatility, and mainstream distribution has moved Bitcoin from the fringe toward institutional legitimacy within 17 years.

We view Bitcoin as no longer an “optional,” speculative asset. It now transitions into a strategic allocation for a growing set of global investors—functioning simultaneously as “digital gold,” corporate treasury collateral, and a non-sovereign store of value in an era of expanding government deficits and evolving monetary policies. The shift seems structural and accelerating.

Why We Believe Bitcoin Is Here To Stay

Bitcoin is a decentralized, scarce, non-sovereign monetary network. It operates as an open, permissionless, globally liquid macro instrument—and it is now accessible through the same regulated vehicles that institutional allocators have used for decades: spot ETFs, individual retirement accounts, and 401(k) plans. This on-ramp for traditional capital is no longer missing.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs accomplished in under two years what took gold ETFs more than fifteen years in cumulative net flows[2]. Morgan Stanley expanded client access to regulated bitcoin products in late 2025. Vanguard—after years of excluding all cryptocurrencies and commodities from its ecosystem—quietly added third-party bitcoin ETFs to its platform. Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, now holds over 843,000 BTC as of end of May 2026.[3]

The performance data reinforces the case. Bitcoin’s drawdowns during 2025 were the shallowest in the asset’s entire history across every standard measurement window—five-year, three-year, one-year, and three-month horizons. Its risk-adjusted returns outperformed Ethereum and Solana throughout most of the year.[4]ARK frames the shift precisely: bitcoin has been evolving from a high-beta speculative play into a structural component of diversified institutional portfolios compared to both traditional assets and its peers.

The scale of the opportunity ARK envisions matches the scale of the shift. The firm projects that the combined market for Bitcoin and smart contract networks could grow at an annualized rate of approximately 60% to roughly $28 trillion by 2030, with Bitcoin accounting for around 70% of that total—approximately $16 trillion in market capitalization.

The Breakthrough Driving The Shift

Bitcoin’s breakthrough is not a single technological event. It is the structural maturation of an entire asset class. The approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 was the catalytic moment, but what followed has been more consequential: the rapid build-out of regulated infrastructure that connects bitcoin directly to the plumbing of traditional capital markets.

Three forces converged to make this possible. First, regulatory milestones cleared the path. The SEC’s introduction of generic exchange listing standards for crypto ETFs slashed approval timelines from 240 days to as few as 75, while the passage of the GENIUS Act in mid-2025 provided the first federal framework for stablecoins. Second, the operational infrastructure matured. Institutional-grade custody, insurance, and audit procedures now meet the compliance requirements of pension funds, endowments, and large asset managers—the very gatekeepers who had previously stayed on the sidelines. Third, bitcoin’s volatility declined in ways that the data cannot ignore. The year 2025 delivered the shallowest drawdowns from all-time highs in Bitcoin’s entire history, and it did so across every standard measurement window ARK tracks.

The practical implications are already visible. Fidelity has added Bitcoin ETFs to select 401(k) plans. [5]Morgan Stanley launched its own spot Bitcoin ETF, MSBT, in April 2026 and recorded $71 million in inflows during its first full week of trading[6]. Many investment consultants now recommend two-to-five percent allocations to Bitcoin in institutional portfolios, citing its low correlation with traditional assets as a diversification benefit rather than a liability. The question among financial institutions has shifted from “should we offer bitcoin exposure?” to “how?” and “how much?”

What The Critics Get Wrong

The most persistent skeptical argument goes something like this: bitcoin is too volatile for institutional portfolios. It is a speculative asset, not a store of value. Any allocation is a gamble, not a strategy.

The problem with this view is that it relies on historical volatility data that no longer reflects bitcoin’s current behavior. ARK’s research suggests that, measured across five-year, three-year, one-year, and three-month horizons, bitcoin’s drawdowns during 2025 were the shallowest on record. Every single measurement window set a new historical low in drawdown severity. This is not a marginal improvement, it is a structural change in how the asset behaves—driven in large part by the arrival of long-duration institutional capital that does not panic-sell at the first sign of turbulence.

Meanwhile, bitcoin’s correlation with traditional assets remains low, which means it can improve the risk-adjusted return profile of a diversified portfolio rather than undermine it. The cost curve for Bitcoin custody, compliance, and access has collapsed. Spot ETFs removed the operational overhead that once justified skepticism. Historical data shows that allocations to Bitcoin have improved risk-adjusted portfolio returns—and the case has only strengthened now that volatility and drawdowns have decreased over a full market cycle.

What Happens Next

Several developments will determine the pace of bitcoin’s institutional integration over the next twelve to eighteen months. Each represents a potential inflection point.

• In our view, the CLARITY Act is the most significant near-term catalyst. Over 120 crypto firms—including Coinbase, Ripple, Circle, Kraken, and a16z—have urged the U.S. Senate to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act before the midterm election cycle consumes the legislative calendar. Passage would formally divide the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commondity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) oversight of digital assets, unlock institutional capital currently sidelined by legal ambiguity, and open the door to spot ETFs for additional assets beyond bitcoin and ether. The practical deadline is May to June; after that, political dynamics make passage far less likely.

• On-chain metrics continue to signal accumulation. The concentration of bitcoin supply among long-term holders, ETFs, and corporate treasuries is rising.

• ETF flow dynamics remain the central tracking metric for institutional adoption. Cumulative net flows across U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs sit near $53 billion, with the peak at $60 billion.[7] The recovery in April—ending a four-month stretch of net outflows—suggests that institutional demand is reasserting itself.

• Retirement account integration is the long-duration unlock. Continued expansion of bitcoin ETF access in 401(k) plans and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) could channel trillions in patient, long-horizon institutional capital into the asset.

• Global regulatory convergence is providing tailwinds. The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (EU’s MiCA) framework is now enforcing compliance standards across the continent. Japan cut its crypto tax rate from 55% to 20% in 2026.[8] The UK and Australia are implementing their own frameworks. Worldwide legitimacy seems to be not a question but a timeline.

We believe Bitcoin’s story in 2026 is no longer about survival, it is about allocation. The infrastructure exists. The regulatory frameworks are taking shape. The institutional capital is arriving through familiar, regulated channels. Bitcoin is a scarce, non-sovereign asset in an era of expanding deficits, evolving monetary policy, and accelerating digital transformation. The question is no longer whether it belongs in a portfolio. The question is whether investors can afford to leave it out.

Important Information

ARK Investment Management, LLC (“ARK”) may hold a financial interest in bitcoin through various strategies and investment vehicles it manages. This advancement in capabilities was driven by an explosive expansion in the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs), starting with nascent reasoning models like OpenAI’s o1 model in the tail end of 2024, as well as the maturation of agent harnesses. These harnesses, such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, include the tools, data integrations, and scaffolding that models need to escape the chatbot interface and begin performing real work.

As a result of these improvements, the length of tasks AI agents could automate inflected in 2025. At the start of the year, leading models could only autonomously perform tasks that would take a human 12 minutes to complete on their own. By the end of the year, that number had grown over five-fold to 66 minutes, and in the first three months of 2026 the boundary has been pushed yet again to nearly 90 minutes.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Source: METR, as of May 12, 2026, ( https://metr.org/blog/2025-03-19-measuring-ai-ability-to-complete-long-tasks/ ). The success of their dedicated coding product, Claude Code, and their general knowledge work platform, Claude Cowork, has led to explosive usage and revenue growth. Their annualized revenue grew at an 850% compound annual growth rate from $0.1 billion[1] at the end of 2023 to $9 billion by the end of 2025, before more than tripling in the first three months of 2026 to $30 billion.[2] The success of Claude Code and Claude Cowork demonstrates that embedding a highly capable model into a harness that can create and edit files, learn and remember skills and processes, and integrate with users’ data sources drives enterprise adoption far more rapidly than progressing model intelligence alone. OpenAI has been quick to refocus its efforts on enterprise tasks in response, with competing products like Codex, and will likely release a competitor to Claude Cowork soon to maintain its strong frontier position. While there is significant room for models to continue to improve in their innate capabilities, we think broad productivity unlocks will continue to be driven by the tight integration of these models into enterprise workflows.

Palantir

While tools like Claude Cowork serve as an agent harness for individuals, Palantir’s platform acts as a combined agent harness and operating system for enterprises, allowing agents to act on an enterprise’s actual operational data. Their products have been battle-tested via their success with the U.S. Government but have since seen significant traction on the commercial front, with year-over-year commercial revenue growth within the U.S. reaching 137%[3] in the fourth quarter of 2025. Palantir threatens to disrupt many legacy one-size-fits-none software products currently used by enterprises, by enabling those enterprises to efficiently create custom software products and automations to manage and streamline their core business processes.

Cloudflare

Cloudflare provides infrastructure and security products for over 20%[4] of the internet and has increasingly evolved into an execution layer for AI agents. Their edge inference capabilities, observability and security tools, storage products, and ability to block or monetize agentic traffic make them a versatile player as AI agents drive increased web traffic and demand for localized inference. The interactions between AI agents and the internet are still in early stages, and we believe that companies that provide security, guardrails, and monetization strategies for those interactions are well positioned moving forward.

Declining Costs And Improving Performance Are Fueling Adoption

Large language models are becoming more performant, and the ecosystems built around them have encouraged exponential growth in usage. OpenRouter, a unified application programming interface (API) through which developers can access LLMs, saw weekly tokens inferenced on their platform increase 25-fold between December 2024 and the end of 2025. Since then, in the first few months of 2026, usage on their platform has tripled again[5]. Drivers of this usage are twofold. As AI tools have become more performant, the price for frontier capabilities has remained relatively flat, offering enterprises and individuals significantly higher return on their investments in frontier AI tools compared to a year ago. Second, while costs for best-in-class models have remained steady, the price for what would have been cutting edge a year ago has collapsed. In many cases, the price for capabilities that would have been considered frontier last year has since fallen over 90%.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Source: ARK Investment Management LLC, 2026, based on data from Artificial Analysis as of 12/17/2025. Price per token has collapsed over 90% in a year for some models, and Chinese labs are catching up on paper. The concern is that the economics of leading AI labs and AI-native software companies will erode in a race to the bottom.

We think this view conflates two different markets. Commoditization is already underway at the trailing edge of capability, where 6- to 12-month-old models are dropping into single-digit cents per million tokens. But even as those costs fall relative to frontier performance, enterprises are increasingly willing to pay for cutting-edge reasoning as performance gains outstrip the cost of increased inference budgets. More importantly, the durable value in this ecosystem sits in the harness, not just in the model. Claude Cowork, Palantir’s AIP, and tools like Cursor are defensible because they embed into workflows and data that are difficult to rip and replace. Even in a scenario where models themselves face commoditization, a software market growing from roughly $1.4 trillion today toward a potential $3–$13 trillion by 2030 offers significant returns for the application and harness layers.

2026 And Beyond

The next leg of this story hinges on two linked developments. First, agents are continuing to scale the length of work they can complete autonomously. Today’s ~90-minute threshold is already reshaping how knowledge workers approach their days, but crossing into multi-hour and eventually full-workday autonomy would be a fundamental shift. The METR benchmark has not yet shown signs of plateau, and upcoming model releases, such as Anthropic’s Mythos model and OpenAI’s GPT 5.5, suggest the trajectory remains intact.

Second, enterprise adoption should broaden as that capability ceiling rises. Early commercial traction has been concentrated in verticals like software engineering and customer service. We expect the next wave to expand more broadly across knowledge work, including finance, healthcare operations, and legal workflows, where agent harnesses with strong data integration and enterprise-grade guardrails are required. Platform revenue durability at the AI labs, continued adoption of Claude Cowork and competing offerings, and vertical ARR ramps should be the leading indicators of how quickly this adoption curve steepens.

In 2025, we witnessed AI agent capability begin to catch up to the early ambitions of the labs that created them. In 2026 and beyond, we expect the reverse, as our ambitions expand and catch up to unexpected capability unlocks. Every knowledge worker is on track to have a digital coworker working in parallel with them and getting measurably smarter every quarter. As agents become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, ARK believes we are entering a new period of economic opportunity and growth.

[1] SaaStr, “How Anthropic Rocketed to $4B ARR”

[2] Anthropic, “Anthropic expands partnership with Google and Broadcom for multiple gigawatts of next-generation compute,” April 2026.

[3] Palantir, “Q4 2025 Earnings Release,” February 2026.

[4] Cloudflare, “Cloudflare, Inc. Waymo, which leads in commercial robotaxi miles, operates just 3,000 vehicles.[ii][iii] Even with that small fleet, Waymo is already pressuring Uber’s and Lyft’s market share in San Francisco within its operating zone. As autonomous technology moves from pilots to production volumes, the economics of personal transportation should fundamentally change.

The US: Waymo Leads, Tesla Could Be First To Scale

Waymo leads in commercial driverless mileage, delivering over 500,000 paid rides per week across 11 US cities.[iv] Backed by a $16 billion funding round in February 2026 that values the company at $126 billion, Waymo is targeting 1 million rides per week by year-end and planning expansion into more than 20 additional cities, including its first international launches in London and Tokyo.[v] Waymo has paved the regulatory pathway for autonomy in many US cities and demonstrated that its vehicles are safer than human drivers.[x] Waymo is positioned as a technology supplier, partnering with automakers like Hyundai, Geely, and Toyota for vehicles and fleet operators including Uber, Lyft, Moove, and Avis in addition to its own platform.

Tesla is taking a fundamentally different approach: vision-only autonomy running on consumer hardware without lidar or radar. Its Austin robotaxi pilot launched in June 2025 with safety monitors, and earlier this year, some vehicles began operating fully unsupervised. While Tesla’s robotaxi fleet is roughly 500 vehicles today, its vertically integrated manufacturing could allow it to scale robotaxi operations faster than competitors. For perspective, Tesla produces more vehicles in a single day than Waymo has in its entire fleet.[xi] Tesla’s vertical strategy has cost advantages as well - ARK’s research suggests the Cybercab’s incremental cost-per-mile could be roughly 50% cheaper than Waymo’s 6th-generation robotaxi.[xii] Tesla plans to be in dozens of US cities by year-end.[xiii]

China: Expansive Rollouts Abroad, Fierce Price Competition At Home

Baidu’s Apollo Go has deployed over 1,000 vehicles across 22 cities, logging more than 17 million cumulative rides.[vii] Pony.ai operates nearly 1,200 vehicles across four major Chinese cities and the UAE, and WeRide runs a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles in more than 30 cities across 11 countries.[viii]

Chinese operators face a challenge their US counterparts do not: fierce price competition with local ride-hail. Chinese ride-hail prices are already a fraction of US levels — roughly $0.50 per mile compared to $2.80 in the US.[xiv] As a result, many Chinese players are increasingly looking abroad. Baidu has partnered with UAE-based Autogo to bring Apollo Go to Abu Dhabi, and is testing in Switzerland and the UK.[ix] WeRide has achieved fully driverless commercial operations in Abu Dhabi and is testing with Grab in Singapore. Pony.ai is expanding into Hong Kong and the UAE. The Middle East is increasingly a strategic growth region for Chinese robotaxi operators - governments there are actively courting autonomous vehicle operators, offering favorable regulatory environments and direct investment.

Most Of Today’s Auto Fleet Will Be Rendered Obsolete

Today, a human-driven ride-hail trip in the US costs roughly $2.80 per mile. ARK projects that robotaxis could reach $0.25 per mile at scale — cheaper than owning a car and roughly one-tenth the cost of current ride-hail pricing. At that price point, it’s possible that incremental buyers will instead forgo personal car ownership in urban areas. Running at high utilization rates, only 24 million robotaxis — under 10% of the current US registered vehicle fleet — could cover all US urban miles traveled.

Who Captures The Economics?

ARK’s research suggests that autonomous technology platforms will capture the vast majority of the ~$34 trillion in enterprise value by 2030, as shown below.[xv] Americans spend 96 billion hours per year behind the wheel, time that our analysis of transportation economics literature values at roughly $3 trillion per year in US urban markets alone.
<div In 2025, mass launched to orbit reached record levels, largely driven by SpaceX, which holds a ~10-year lead on the industry after first landing an orbital-class booster in 2015 and executing consistently on reusability since.[ii] As AI hyperscalers [iii] explore orbital data centers amid growing terrestrial power constraints, and as the US and China compete to return to the Moon, the economics of reaching orbit are becoming increasingly important.

Leaders, Enablers, And Beneficiaries

The space economy has given rise to an entire industry, with thousands of companies participating across the value chain. Below are some of the key leaders, enablers, and beneficiaries.

SpaceX. SpaceX has dominated the launch market, cutting costs by ~95% in accordance with Wright’s Law [iv], from ~$15,600/kg to under ~$1,000/kg since 2008. Starlink, the company’s satellite connectivity service with more than 10 million active subscribers,[v] serves as the company’s cash flow engine, funding capital-intensive rocket development. SpaceX is now developing Starship, the first fully reusable rocket, which could reduce launch costs further and enable new applications including orbital data centers. This thesis gained additional weight following its acquisition of xAI in February 2026. Beyond broadband, SpaceX is expanding into direct-to-cell services and Starshield, the defense variant of Starlink.

Rocket Lab. Rocket Lab is the most active launch provider in the West outside of SpaceX, built on its small-lift (~300kg) Electron rocket. The company is now developing Neutron, a reusable medium-lift (~13,000kg) vehicle expected to fly by the end of 2026, and is vertically integrated across launch services and space systems (e.g. satellite buses). While SpaceX holds a significant lead, launch demand is expected to support multiple providers, particularly as SpaceX increasingly focuses on its own constellation and potential orbital infrastructure. Rocket Lab has also leaned into national security, winning its largest contract to date in December 2025 worth over $800 million for national security satellites to be built and operated through 2029.[vi]

L3Harris. L3Harris positions itself as a “trusted disruptor,” partnering with traditional defense primes and emerging technology firms to participate in major programs of record, while investing in new technologies through its venture arm. In space, the company participates in national security satellite programs and is well positioned for missile defense initiatives such as Golden Dome, given its orbital sensing and tracking capabilities. L3Harris is also one of the few US providers of solid rocket motors (SRMs), a critical bottleneck in missiles and some launch vehicles. In January 2026, the US Department of War committed $1 billion to triple the company’s SRM production capacity by 2030, with the unit expected to go public via an initial public offering (IPO) in the second half of 2026.[vii]

Declining Launch Costs Are The Foundation Of The Space Economy

In ARK’s view, launch costs are the critical unlock for the space economy. Without low-cost access to orbit, most space-based applications are not economically viable. Satellite connectivity has provided the clearest near-term opportunity for cash flow generation, as demonstrated by Starlink. According to ARK’s research, satellite connectivity revenue could reach ~$160B annually at scale. Falcon 9 enabled this shift through partial reusability, reducing costs to under ~$1,000/kg in line with Wright’s Law[viii]. ARK’s research suggests that Starship’s full reusability could reduce costs by another order of magnitude to below ~$100/kg, as shown below, potentially enabling new applications such as orbital data centers.

<picture></picture>

Source: Big Ideas 2026, Slide 80
Note: The timeline for achieving scale is uncertain due to numerous variables. Terrestrial solutions face major constraints: nuclear plants take years to build, wind and solar are intermittent, gas turbines are largely sold out this decade,[ix] grid interconnection queues can exceed five years,[x] and behind-the-meter generation still faces delays and local opposition.[xi] As a result, some are beginning to consider space-based alternatives.

Satellites placed in sun-synchronous orbit could harness near-continuous solar power with minimal operating costs. While Sam Altman has called orbital data centers “ridiculous” given today’s launch costs,[xii] the economics shift significantly as prices fall. ARK’s research suggests orbital compute becomes cost-competitive with terrestrial alternatives at ~$300/kg and ~25% cheaper at scale below ~$100/kg, as shown below. Elon Musk believes this could become the lowest-cost source of AI compute within two to three years,[xiii] though the timeline depends on SpaceX’s execution with Starship.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Source: Big Ideas 2026, Slide 7
Note: ARK internal analysis on this emerging opportunity. The most important milestone to watch this year is Starship, particularly SpaceX’s attempt to catch the upper stage and demonstrate full reusability. If successful, launch costs could fall dramatically, enabling new space-based industries and driving a step change in orbital economic activity. In the medium term, the US, led by SpaceX, and China are racing back to the Moon. Longer term, SpaceX’s mission points beyond the Moon toward Mars as the ultimate frontier.

Subscribe To ARK Research

[i] https://spacenews.com/orbital-atk-believes-in-satellite-servicing-but-not-in-rocket-reusability/

[ii] In December 2015, SpaceX successfully landed its booster (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/22/science/spacex-rocket-landing.html). That was about 25 years ago. Today, you can sequence a whole human genome for about $100 at scale. ARK’s research suggests that drops to roughly $10 by 2030. That cost collapse is turning biology into one of the largest data-generation engines on the planet — and the scale and complexity of this data demand AI.

This is the multiomics–AI flywheel: plummeting costs generate more biological data, more data trains better AI models, and better models produce better tools, tests, and treatments — which generate even more and richer data. It is a virtuous cycle, and ARK believes it is just getting started.

In our Big Ideas 2026 research, we lay out why we think this flywheel could reshape healthcare — from how biological data is generated, to how diseases are detected, to how drugs are developed, and ultimately to whether some diseases can be cured entirely. Across each of these areas, the companies driving this convergence are reaching meaningful inflection points.

<a class="image-link image2 Synthetic DNA is a key input across drug discovery, diagnostics development, and across research disciplines from medicine to defense — and Twist’s platform has made it faster, cheaper, and more accessible to design, test, and iterate on biological constructs. This matters because the multiomics–AI flywheel depends not only on the ability to read DNA at falling costs, but also on the ability to write and engineer DNA at scale. In ARK’s view, as AI-driven drug discovery and molecular diagnostics continue to expand, demand for synthetic biology tools like Twist’s should grow alongside them.

Molecular Diagnostics: Tempus AI (TEM). Tempus has built one of the world’s largest libraries of multimodal clinical and molecular data, and an AI-enabled operating system to make that data actionable at the point of care. Over 50% of U.S. oncologists are now connected to the Tempus platform — a level of clinical adoption that is generating a powerful data flywheel, which improves clinical decisions and drives further adoption. The company is broadening this flywheel across disease areas including cardiology, neurology, and infectious disease. In ARK’s view, the scale and breadth of Tempus’s data moat reinforces a durable competitive advantage and as more clinical and molecular data flows through the platform, that advantage compounds.

AI-Developed Drugs: Recursion Pharmaceuticals (RXRX). Recursion is a clinical-stage TechBio company that has built the Recursion OS, an AI-native drug discovery and development platform powered by one of the world’s largest proprietary biological and chemical datasets. In late 2025, Recursion reported early positive clinical data for a therapeutic targeting familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a rare condition with no approved pharmacotherapies — a meaningful proof point that AI-native platforms can translate computational biological insights into real clinical outcomes. The company has earned more than $500 million in cumulative milestone payments from partners suggesting that large pharma is increasingly willing to invest behind AI-driven discovery workflows.

Cures: CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP). CRISPR, in partnership with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, brought the first approved CRISPR-based therapy to market: Casgevy, a single-dose and potentially curative treatment for sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. Patient infusions increased nearly 13x in 2025 versus 2024, demonstrating an early signal that gene-editing therapies can scale commercially. The company is also advancing an in vivo gene-editing program that demonstrated deep and durable reductions in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol — signaling a potential expansion from rare disease into cardiovascular-related disease, the world’s leading killer. ARK sees this rare-to-common disease trajectory as a key theme: companies proving gene editing in rare disease are building the clinical and manufacturing foundation to eventually address much larger patient populations.

The Breakthrough Driving The Shift

Plummeting costs are generating an ocean of biological data. According to ARK’s research, an increase in the number of diagnostic test volumes is generating more data than companies like OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, and xAI have used to train large language models — and that volume is projected to grow 10x by 2030. At the same time, AI models have become capable enough to extract increasingly meaningful insights from this data, from helping to identify drug targets to predicting patient outcomes.

This convergence is what makes the current moment so pivotal. The cost declines have been underway for years, but the AI capability to make use of the resulting data at scale is recent. One of the most tangible impacts of this development is the potential to shift the economics of drug development. Today, it takes more than a decade, can cost billions and roughly four out of every five clinical candidates ultimately fail. AI-driven drug development could reduce time to market by roughly 40% and total costs by roughly fourfold, according to ARK’s research. And downstream, improved biological insights should enable the capabilities to develop cures for more diseases.

The companies profiled above are among those powering this flywheel — generating the data, building the models, and developing the tools, tests, and treatments that keep the cycle accelerating.

The Debate: What Critics Get Wrong

Can AI actually improve drug development outcomes? No AI-designed drug has reached approval yet — and skeptics are right to note that. But the proof points are building. AI-driven candidates are entering and advancing through clinical trials, and major biotech and large pharma companies are putting real capital behind these workflows. We are starting to see these translate to tangible clinical proof points, including Recursion’s clinical data highlighted above and Generate:Biomedicines’ advancement of an AI-engineered antibody therapeutic into Phase 3 trials for severe asthma. The full validation cycle is still underway, but the trajectory is accelerating.

Can one-time cures work — for the healthcare system and for drug developers? Gene-editing therapies can carry high upfront price tags. Casgevy is priced at $2.2 million. But these prices are generally positioned to reflect the value of replacing the lifetime cost of managing the disease, which is why payers are willing to reimburse them. By the end of 2025, roughly 90% of U.S. patients had reimbursed access to Casgevy. In some cases, cures could ultimately drive total savings back to the healthcare system. ARK’s hereditary angioedema case study in Big Ideas 2026 estimates that a one-time gene-editing treatment priced at approximately $3 million could save the U.S. healthcare system approximately $52 billion in direct medical costs across current patients’ remaining lifetimes. The economics also favor drug developers: cures frontload cash in a drug’s commercial lifecycle, allowing them to capture more revenue before facing competition and generic entry.

What Happens Next

Multiomics tools getting cheaper and more powerful: Companies like Illumina and PacBio continue to push sequencing costs lower while improving the depth and completeness of biological data their platforms can capture. If these trends persist, the result is more data at higher quality.

Molecular diagnostics expanding in scope and scale: The range of conditions detectable through molecular testing continues to grow — from multi-cancer early detection blood tests like Guardant Health’s Shield to minimal residual disease monitoring and AI-enabled companion diagnostics across disease areas. Broader adoption of these tools should improve patient outcomes through earlier detection and more precise treatment decisions.

AI-driven drug development building clinical proof points and heading toward first approvals: A growing number of AI-driven candidates are advancing through clinical trials, and the coming years could see the first AI-designed therapies reach regulatory approval. Beyond individual programs — including progress from Recursion and Generate:Biomedicines as highlighted above — the broader development to watch is whether AI-driven approaches begin to measurably improve the probability of success in clinical development, a key lever in reshaping drug development economics.

Gene editing shifting to in vivo delivery and expanding into larger disease populations: The shift from ex vivo to in vivo delivery — where treatments are administered directly into the body rather than requiring cells to be extracted, modified, and reinfused — could dramatically broaden the range of patients and diseases gene editing can reach. Intellia expects Phase 3 data for its in vivo gene-editing treatment for hereditary angioedema by mid-2026 — potentially positioning it as one of the first in vivo CRISPR therapies to reach the market next year. At the same time, gene editing is moving beyond rare disease. CRISPR Therapeutics is advancing an in vivo program targeting lipid disorders, with 2026 updates that could further build the clinical evidence base for gene editing in common conditions.

Closing Thought

The convergence of AI and biology is not a future possibility — it is underway. The cost of reading and writing DNA continues to fall, molecular diagnostics are generating growing volumes of biological data, and companies across the multiomics landscape are translating these advances into real clinical and commercial progress. ARK believes this flywheel is poised to fundamentally reshape healthcare — and it’s just getting started.

Subscribe To ARK Research

Important Information

ARK Investment Management, LLC (“ARK”) may hold a financial interest in the companies discussed through various strategies and investment vehicles it manages.
